DPP Configurator

Overview

The DPP Configurator lets you create, publish and maintain the Digital Product Passport records that the EU Ecodesign Regulation (ESPR, EU 2024/1781) makes mandatory. The module brings material composition, hazardous substance declarations, carbon footprint, recycled content and repairability data together in a single passport record.

Key Concepts

  • ProductPassport — the DPP record at product level (GTIN, compliance score, passport/QR URL).
  • Readiness status — based on the compliance score out of 100: DPP Ready (≥80), Partially Ready (≥60), Incomplete (≥40) or Critical (<40). The score is the average of four components: traceability, carbon data quality, circularity and evidence completeness.
  • Substance of Concern — hazardous substance records that exceed the REACH 0.10% (1000 ppm) threshold; exceeding the threshold requires immediate action.
  • Batch / Serial — a production batch or unique serial number attached to a DPP record; serial numbers can be published via QR code and revoked when necessary.
  • Lifecycle Event — events recorded over the lifetime of the passport (production, shipment, service, end of life and so on).

Typical Workflow

  1. Open DPP Configurator from the left-hand menu and create a new passport record or select an existing product.
  2. Enter the material composition, hazardous substance declarations and supplier evidence.
  3. Add the sustainability metrics (carbon footprint, recycled content, repairability).
  4. Recalculate the compliance score, review the open findings and mark them as resolved.
  5. Create a batch or serial number and, if needed, publish it via QR code.
  6. Take the passport live with publish; export it as a PDF, or share it by defining an access grant.

Every published passport has two possible public addresses:

  • If a GTIN is entered → /01/{gtin} — the GS1 Digital Link standard, resolvable globally.
  • If there is no GTIN → /p/{token} — an unguessable identifier generated when the record is created.

A code such as DPP-0001 is for internal use (lists, PDFs, audit trail); it is not used in the public address. The reason: a sequential code would let anyone who knows the address walk through DPP-0001, DPP-0002 and pull your company's entire published product portfolio one by one. The token makes that impossible.

Do not regenerate the QR code

The token is fixed per record and never changes — a QR code you have already printed stays valid. However, if you unpublish the passport the link returns 404; publishing it again makes the same address work once more.

What Is Visible on the Public Passport?

Once you publish a passport, anyone who scans the QR code can reach it without logging in. Which sections are made public is therefore controlled per record — from the "Sections Visible on the Public Passport" panel in Step 9 (Preview).

Hidden by default (because they count as trade secrets):

  • Material list (BOM) — percentages, country of origin, per-material supplier name
  • Suppliers
  • Processes and energy data

Visible by default:

  • Chemical substances (ESPR already requires substances of concern to be disclosed to the consumer)
  • Evidence documents, lifecycle events, score breakdown

Always visible, cannot be hidden: product name, GTIN, product type and economic operator details (manufacturer/importer identity) — EU 2024/1781 makes these mandatory.

Sections you hide are announced on the passport page with a note saying they have been withheld by the manufacturer for reasons of commercial confidentiality; an auditor or business partner can still reach this data through an access link you issue in Step 12 (Access Grants).

Existing passports

These defaults apply to previously published records as well — after the update, BOM, supplier and process data were automatically withdrawn from public passports. If you want a section to be visible, open the record, tick it in the panel and save.

Feature Reference

  • Passport CRUD, version history, batch and serial number management
  • Publishing and revoking unique serial numbers via QR code
  • Lifecycle event recording
  • Publish / unpublish and external access grants
  • PDF passport export and evidence file upload/download — at most 25 MB per file; PDF, office documents, images, CSV/XML and ZIP are accepted
  • Integrity seal: the SHA-256 digest of the published passport is stored; the verification on the passport page shows whether the content was modified outside the application after publishing. Updating the record through the application refreshes the seal automatically.
  • ECO alerts: a simulation of how an engineering change affects passport compliance
  • Product grouping by collection
  • AI-assisted summary extraction (ai-summarize)

Constraints / Known Limits

  • ERP (SAP, Logo, Netsis) and PLM (Windchill, Teamcenter, Enovia, SolidWorks PDM) connections are at adapter-contract level; a real live integration must be set up separately.
  • The supplier portal and document upload flow do not yet have a full approval workflow.
  • Full GS1 Digital Link support and sector-specific templates (textile, furniture, electronics, chemicals) are on the roadmap.
